Alcohol in moderation has been known to increase digestion, but this may be due to its relaxing effect; in higher "doses", alcohol can cause inflammation of the stomach lining, which is one of the primary reasons that an individual may experience heartburn and nausea the day after a bout with binge drinking.
Animal research suggests that brain cells destroyed by long-time exposure to alcohol can be reversed when the animal is abstinent from alcohol; this finding appear to contradict the long-held belief that brain cells, once destroyed, cannot live again.
Nearly two-thirds of children 15 and younger who died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes were riding with the drinking driver, 20% of which were properly restrained at the time of the crash, and that restraint use decreased as the driver's blood alcohol concentration increased.
By interfering with hormones in the body, alcohol can interfere with calcium metabolism and bone structure, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
