According to a study by the Task Force of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, both immediate and longer term problems and resulting consequences, such as hangovers, blacking out, academic failure, injuries, and fatalities, are associated with heavy alcohol use.
When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it passes through the placenta to the growing fetus. Because a developing baby's body breaks down alcohol much more slowly than an adult's, a fetus's blood alcohol level can rise much higher than its mother's and stay elevated longer.
